Carmine Underground

Post: # 15762Post Misha »

This post is to help clarify what the atmosphere is like in this area as more people are starting to hang around here! In addition, I thought it would be neat to throw in a little bit of the history while I'm at it.

Carmine Underground
Hidden away in various parts of the city are secret entrances leading down into the depths. There you’ll find yourself in a place known by the locals as the ‘Underground’.

Lifestyle
Despite the shabby looks and the ‘hidden’ nature, the people of the Underground are community focused and supportive. All sorts of people are welcome in the Underground, from down on their luck artists, to out of work folks, and to even kicked out teens. Life is humble for those living in the Underground as they’re staying in small, cramped spaces that aren’t the comfiest.

Arts, music, and freedom are big parts of the Underground. The residents often look the other way - or even encourage people to do the stuff that folks typically turn their noses up at such as graffiti, loud punk music, or skateboarding. Many also tend to be the crafty type who likes getting dirty and doing their own work- they learn to fix their own homes rather than relying on others. In fact, they much prefer people that are ‘rougher’ or ‘misfits’ rather than goody-two-shoes types as they tend to assume those ‘sickenly cheerful’ and polite people are fake or self-centered.

The Underground these days has a smaller permanent population, with more buildings being abandoned than lived in. A good chunk of people only stay there temporarily until their situation improves, with many people moving out to have families just to have some sun or a more aesthetically pleasing home again. Besides that, due to the perceived nature of the place, teens and young adults assume it’s a free-for-all and hangout or live in the abandoned lots every once in a while. Those residents normally end up leaving as well when they are kicked out by the landlords or given a bill for their stay there at least.

It is not all sunshine and lollipops though - with no actual sun shining on the place. Although some things slip by (as is with any town) due to its perceived nature of shadiness, they are even more on a look out for troublemakers ruining their reputation. The place is not lawless though, and residents regularly take offense at the assumption claiming: ‘ Just because we are poor, doesn’t mean we’re poor sports! ‘ and such colorful words. While the underground is free for folks to express themselves as they wish (within limits), the community has their own ways of dealing with anybody abusing it, or making the place absolutely worse.

Despite hating that misconception, they’re ruder and more standoffish to outsiders; especially to those who judge or make misconceptions of the Underground or those trying to change the locals’ style of life to their definition of ‘better’. While it doesn’t exactly help the image, it at least tends to keep the goody two shoes of the regions away that they’re less fond of. To those that give them a chance, or to those in the community, they’re a bit warmer around. They often help each other out and are the type to fix a neighbor’s leaky roof just for a soda.

Crime
Despite appearances, this is not some lawless land where there’s crime and danger around every corner- they have ERTs after all so that wouldn’t fly! In fact, it’s the opposite, if you’re going around openly committing crimes- mugging others or randomly beating people up- that person will be roughed up in return by the locals and be reported or brought to the RTMP. They do tend to let it slide when it comes to selling knock offs and thievery though, seeing them as ‘minor’ crimes that don’t really hurt people so long as it isn’t from those less fortunate or small stores. In fact, there’s a small sub-community and some businesses around petty thieves and those dealing in knockoffs, especially in the area around the tracks.
Note: Despite Toro being 18+ and exploring some darker, serious subjects such as war and death, we are still a Pokemon MCRP. We do not allow mature subjects to be portrayed in Toro’s RP such as narcotics or sex work as they go against the themes of the server, can be immersion breaking, and may be inappropriate or upsetting for other players. Do not roleplay anything involving that; this also means that you should not be referencing it ICly either (ex: don’t have your character say they did a line of powder)
History
Carmine Underground originally was a set of underground homes, outposts, and other dugouts that were made to help avoid the heat in a more energy-efficient fashion when it was a mining city. As the city grew and developed even more it was mostly forgotten and left alone except for those who already lived there. However, in the Winter of 1058 the villain team CODEX left the desert town frozen and iced over- and also led to the revitalization of the Underground.

Although parts were thawed out, the buildings were not built to accommodate what happened. With the state they ended up in, it was decided the whole town would be better off rebuilt. With guidance of Mayor Norinne & Mayor Van-Knighton, those who wished to stay in Carmine moved underground while the above was being cleaned and rebuilt. They took what was already there and cleaned it up, and they also connected different underground areas with the help of trained Pokemon to expand to help accommodate them better.

When the town above finished building more homes, most of the population moved back above ground. Others chose to stay, and the temporary shelters were never taken down. It started becoming a safe haven for the more rebellious types who didn’t like the new bright and colorful direction of the town, or those who grew to appreciate the sense of community of those below. However, with the focus being on the area above ground, the Underground was forgotten once again. The living conditions grew poorer without as much maintenance, and more criminals started to use this as a hiding place.

By the time Mayor Van-Knighton died Mayor Norinne was rather old, and their assistant Vince essentially began to run Carmine. Vince took it into his hands to focus on the underground; he had spent a lot of time in the Underground as he was a teen, and used his first hand knowledge to work on making it a safer place. The Gym Leader, Gale Massey, also had a large part in bettering the town after having also grown up there. Buildings were made more stable and durable, resources were given to help improve the lives of those there, newly installed ERTs discouraged serious crimes, and various facilities received regular maintenance once again. Life was getting better for those who lived there.

Although it wasn’t actively advertised, with more being done down there it was discussed more by locals. As one person heard about it, knowledge of its existence spread and more people started to check it out. While most were scared off or found it too ‘gross’ or assumed it too ‘unsafe’ to return, they welcomed those who accepted them and treated them with respect instead of judging the appearance.
