Temple of Groudon

Post: # 14322Post Vernon »

Note: While reading, it is important to remember that these are the teachings of this religion as they have been passed down. People always have and always will have their own interpretations of these subjects, which means these do not have to be strictly followed if that is something your character would not do. These descriptions are not comprehensive, meaning that players have a lot of wiggle room when it comes to behaving however they’d like as a follower of a religion. Groudonisim

Cosmology:
(( PLEASE NOTE: These are the BELIEFS of Groudonists. This cosmology and origin story should not be assumed to necessarily be true, and there will be directly conflicting evidence with other religious lore.))

The Temple of Groudon teaches Groudonism, obviously. This is the worship of the deity Groudon, creator of land, life, and ruin.

The teachings of the religion states that Arceus did indeed create the world, and its gods. However, the teachings directly state that this is the end of Arceus’ involvement in the creation of the world, and resorted to more of a governing figure over the gods during the early eras.

Following the creation of the world, Arceus created various formless forces that would soon become the deities known today. For the most part, Arceus made them in Threes, though sometimes this wasn’t the case. For example, Arceus created Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina all at once, as did he create Rayquaza, Kyogre, and Groudon all at once. This rule of threes was thought to originally be a symbol of connection between the three deities, and thusly, their religions, according to the Scripture of Groudon.

And for a while, this proved to be true. The three deities, still formless at this point, selected what they would mostly associate with on the mortal plane, and set out to live harmoniously on that plane. Kyogre took the vast and expansive sea, enjoying the potential isolation should he ever need it. Rayquaza took the expansive sky, embodying the wind. This left Groudon to claim the land, a resource rich claim, if not the smallest of the three. Noble Groudon did not mind this though. He aimed to make the best of what he had.

Groudon spent his time, trying to decide how he should make the best of his small piece of the world that he had claim to. It would soon dawn on the Great Lord that the creation of Life, life that could grow and thrive on his land, would be the best solution. He bid request to Xerneas, the deity of Life, to use her power to grant Groudon the ability to create life. Xerneas agreed to help the Noble God, and with her power, created a vast expanse of plant life. The amount of power she expended forced her to fall dormant for many centuries, leaving Groudon to find his own way to finish the creation of Life on his domain.

As a response, Groudon asked his Father, Arceus, to grant him the power to create life on the land itself. Arceus was wary of Groudon’s request, as Giratina had just betrayed him not long ago. Unwilling to give Groudon the chance to betray him, Arceus agreed to help Groudon, but not grant him the power to do so himself. The two Gods, together, created the rest of the inhabiting life on land.

Though Groudon’s efforts were not unnoticed by his brothers. Kyogre and Rayquaza both demanded from their Father that they too gain life in their domains, and to prevent a feud, did so, but to a lesser degree than he did for Groudon. While Rayquaza was satisfied with what he had gotten, and retreated to his domain, and his new subjects. Kyogre, however, was furious he was not given the same level of effort Arceus gave Groudon, if not more. The Ocean God decided the best course of action was to sabotage his brother’s work.

Kyogre’s retaliation began with the rising of the tides, claiming the land as the sea, and what lay on it as his. Hurt, betrayed, and angered, Groudon responded by taking back the little landmasses he had claim to, demanding that Kyogre cease his conquest. Unfortunately, Kyogre refused, and challenged Groudon to force the end of the Ocean Conquest. Unwilling to let his already limited domain be claimed by his brother, who had the largest domain of the two, Lord Groudon accepted the challenge, and engaged in combat with the Ocean Lord. This battle raged on for eons, with the two at a near stalemate, destroying the areas where they fought with harsh sunlight, devastating storms, crashing waves, and formations of mountains. It wasn’t long before Lord Groudon stood victorious over his brother, forcing him to agree to accept what he had, and leave well enough alone.

Unfortunately, despite being victorious, the battle left Lord Groudon weak, and weary. He decided that it would be best for him to slumber, and regain his strength, until the time he may awake again, and rule his domain directly once more.

History:

((History Coming Soon! I only posted this as is now in the interest of people being able to properly RP out the religion and its beliefs.))

Views:

Groudonists believes above all in being masters of the land. They think the world around them is their clay. Acts that alter the world (however not destroy) are tributes to Groudon himself, walking in his light and creating and adjusting as he once did. Land is the lifeblood of the world, without which all life would be unable to dwell. Humans were the greatest creation of Groudon and Arceus, and therefore their domain is the most important.

Due to this ‘Masters of the Land’ viewpoint, Groudonists have no qualms about dietary habits. In fact, it’s considered sinful to strictly eat one kind of food. Meat, vegetables, and so on are all on the table. However, it’s never stated that all food is equal. While not prohibited, the use of alcohol and drugs are considered to be immoral and a waste of resources by the modern church.

It’s also important to Groudonists to keep in a fit physical condition. Strength is a symbol of hard work and dedication. Only the sick and elderly are allowed to slack on this commandment. Every other case is demanded to be in the highest physical condition one can be.

Many Groudonists believe in standing their ground, but not being pushed around. Like their Noble God, they do not throw the first strike in a disagreement. They only strike back after the first attack on them is made, and fight tooth and nail until they win.

The afterlife for Groudonists is said to be a lush environment, where atop a mountain Groudon lives with his most loyals. He looks down below them, admiring the work of his followers as they shape their own paradise. Those who failed to walk in his light are doomed to a watery hell, with the intense pressure of the land and sea over them until repentance is paid.

Interfaith Relations:

Those who worship Groudon tend to politely disagree, to put it mildly, with Kyogre worship, for the reasons given in the Cosmology and Beliefs section. Some are outright hostile to the religion. That said, given Hoenn is split between both, this hostility is usually not aggressive. For many, especially between friends, it would usually be relegated to jokes and possible periodic arguments at tense moments when it comes up. More zealotry tends to be found among those who didn’t need to interact with their Kyogre-worshipping counterparts as much. This mostly means those from cities in Hoenn that are almost exclusively Groudonian, such as more landlocked areas. Petalburg, Rustboro, and Lavaridge, for example, are more Groudonian areas. Lilycove is to some degree, but is sufficiently cosmopolitan to mitigate this. For the analogous predominantly Kyogre-areas, see the Kyogre lore.

However, many of even the most polite of Groudonian do harbor distaste for Kyogre himself, obviously, if not his worshippers.

Place of Worship:

Groudon Temples tend to exist within remote areas, or near naturally occurring lava. It’s said that every Volcano can be considered a temple of Groudon, as they are the streams of his dormant consciousness.
