Under normal conditions, Castform is a small Normal-type pokemon resembling a cloud. Its body is a thin membrane filled with water vapor, surrounding a central solid “core”. This core contains all of Castform’s vital processes, and allows Castform to regenerate its body as long as the core remains undamaged. Castform doesn’t seem to eat. It relies entirely on water vapor for sustenance, repairs, and reproduction. Castform reproduce by budding. A new central core begins to condense on the parent Castform’s body in humid environments. When the new core matures, it splits from the parent body. The space between the core and the outer membrane then swells with water vapor, and a new Castform is created.

Castform is a unique creature with the ability to undergo rapid mutation of its structure, type, and composition based on its environment. Propensity to transform is based on several environmental factors, including Temperature, Humidity, and UV exposure. Castform undergo these transformations in order to better maintain a consistent internal body temperature and level of vapor. The different forms and their purposes are as follows:

Sunny Form - A transformation in response to high temperature, high UV exposure, low humidity. The Castform becomes a fire type and becomes capable of losing heat rapidly to keep itself cool. As a result, its body is warm to the touch. In this form, Castform are generally more energetic, excitable, and occasionally aggressive. They are more willing to expend energy in this form than any other.

Rainy Form - A transformation in response to generally warm temperatures and high humidity, and usually only during rain. This is the Castform’s preferred form for reproduction and repair, as this water-type form allows them to swell with water and water vapor up to three times its normal mass. The Castform’s external membrane is much thinner in this form than in others, likely because it does not have to worry about losing water vapor in 100% humidity. In this form, Castform are generally more sociable and relaxed. Great numbers of Castform have been spotted congregating in the rain, while they are generally more ambivalent to each other in their normal form.

Snowy Form - A transformation in response to temperatures close to or below freezing. Castform becomes an Ice-type pokemon more capable of retaining its body heat and operating at a near-freezing internal temperature. In this form, Castform are generally more sluggish, calm, and less willing to fight or expend energy. Castform seem unwilling to stay in this form for long, and prefer to seek warmer environments so it can return to normal activities.

The initial transformation to accommodate environment conditions seems to be voluntary. Normal forms and the form that best accommodates environmental conditions have been observed within the same area. However, if environmental conditions change, transformation into a new form or a return to normal form seems to be involuntary. This is likely an emergency response adaptation to prevent damage to the Castform. A Sunny form would lose body heat too rapidly in a cooler environment, a Snowy form would overheat in a warmer environment, and a Rainy form would quickly lose its internal water vapor to an environment with low humidity.

The different forms of Castform have been spotted in the following environments:

Warmer environments such as Tyrian, Carmine, Ferrite, and Cobalt have Normal form and Sunny forms. Normal form Castform are able to spontaneously transform into Sunny form within these environments.

Temperate environments such as Aurelia, Canvas, and Viridis only have Normal form.

Colder environments such as Adamas and Galena have Normal form and Snowy form. Normal form Castform are able to spontaneously transform into Snowy form within these environments.

Rain Form only appears in the rain.
