Houndoom Lore Update

Post: # 14659Post Vernon »

Hey guys! Vernon here with Lore Team! We just wanted to give everyone a little update on some Lore! Everyone’s probably familiar with the dex entry for Houndoom:
Pokemon Gold Dex Entry wrote:If you are burned by the flames it shoots from its mouth, the pain will never go away.
Now this has been coined as the term “Houndoom Necroneuropathy Disease” in Kiori Iishin’s thesis on Houndoom ( http://www.toro-league.com/forum/viewto ... 118&t=2548 ). This was a well written thesis, and one of the first examples of players directly submitting lore to Lore Team to approve, and we love seeing things like this!

Now, while this is all well and good, Lore Team has a few concerns about this in general. We love Pokemon, and we’d hate to see one potentially alienated for something like this, especially one with such a cool Mega form. So- rather than retconning Ria’s lore, we’ve decided that creating an IC reason that makes this pooch safe for homes again would be the best course of action.

As a reminder:
RiaLangset wrote:A human disease that develops by the flame of Houndoom. The burn from the flame is as if regular burns, but Houndoom fire has a neurotoxin within it that attaches to nerves of the body and kills them. The resulting pain is a chronic condition where the pain doesn't stop, giving a constant burn-like sensation that can range in intensity. It is a lifelong disease that is marked with flare-ups of the pain, and several psychological effects from this, such as: Depression, anxiety, loss of appetite, restlessness, and paranoia. However, while no direct cure has been found, a way to manage the disease has recently emerged. Commonly used in chronic back pain sufferers, nerve block injections have now been prescribed to those with this disease. Done without surgery, this injection takes only an hour long doctor's visit. Pain symptoms fade within two days, and remain that way for a year. Yearly visits for this injection will keep the disease under control and allow patients to live a productive, pain free life.
With this in mind, Lore Team has decided that we want to make this condition more opt-in. Like an extreme allergy. In order to do this, we’ve decided that ICly treatment has evolved to the point where we can vaccinate the general populous. Some bodies may still lack that defense, and you can decide for yourself if you want your character to be part of that group or not.

Ultimately, we want to stress the reason we did this is purely so we don’t make it seem like anyone with a Houndoom is like that person who likes venomous spiders as their pets. Pokemon are dangerous creatures in Toro’s universe already. We just want to ensure that players feel they have no reason that they shouldn’t have a Houndoom because they may think people might not want to be around one of their favorite Pokemon, and subsequently that character, or they may go through with it, and find that small children are scared of the big scary dog they know could cause visits to the scary hospital every year, for the rest of their life.
