The Toro Games

Post: # 9430Post Macecurb »

Hey folks! Mace here with the official follow-up to the Toro Games post here! Skol unfortunately ran into some technical issues while writing up his own version, so I asked for his permission to take a crack at it. So, let me know if you want me to keep doing these for the remaining days!

The Toro Games – Day 1
“Ladies and gentlemen, it looks like we're about ready to start here.” The faceless announcer's voice crackles over the state-of-the-art black and white televisions of Toro. “I've just been informed that the competitors are in place, you should see them soon...”

A moment passes, and the image on the screen flips over to a view of the area surrounding the massive, gold-plated horn known only as the cornucopia, weapons and equipment of various kinds strewn around the ground. Twenty-four metal cylinders jut out from the grass, the tops soon opening to reveal the competitors rising as if from the grave. Each of them had been resting comfortably in their homes just the day before, their familiar lives being torn away from them and replaced with a single rule: Only one person survives.

The narrator begins listing their names as they familiarize themselves with their surroundings, the screen switching to a scoreboard showing all their names along with pictures of their faces.

These twenty four individuals were selected to die here, according to the whims of the producers of what had come to be called the 'Toro Games.'

Almost immediately, an explosion is heard. Hickock, scared and having recognized Mimi, attempts to run to the woman. The moment his enormous orange paw hits the ground, his body is flung skyward in a few dozen pieces.

Many competitors cringe. A few hold back vomit, knowing full well that anything hitting the ground would do the same to them. Some of them begin to panic, and among the nervous mutterings, Stanley can be heard calling out to Lana, who nods back to her husband, a tinge of fear showing on her typically-blank visage.

“And here we go folks... Five, four, three, two, one! Let the games begin!” The announcer calls out the start, and chaos erupts. Several of the competitors simply begin running in completely the opposite direction of the Cornucopia, forsaking equipment altogether for a precious few moments of relative safety. Peter, Colt, Daniel, Lana, Stanley, Corey, Netlia, and Mimi all run for their lives. The only ones running together are Lana and Stanley, the only married pair of the group and the only ones choosing strength in numbers.

Nearer to the golden equipment stash, some of the competitors begin fighting. Thirteen makes a beeline for a promising-looking backpack, but is soon tripped and beaten to death by Kiori, who had managed to procure a telescoping baton. A similar exchange occurs on the other side of the Cornucopia, with Tom grabbing for a bag only to have his nose broken by Michael Gabriel (AKA Angel) for his troubles. Tom slinks off with his life, coming across a bag of C4 and related equipment on his way into the wilds.

Leann, Shiv, Wally and Max succeed in securing bags filled with various supplies, and make their way out into the wilderness of the arena without incident. Davis (AKA Moon) manages to find a mace, only to have it forcibly ripped out of his hands by the young Edgar, who proceeds to use the mace to hold up Tom for his explosives.

Nearby, others find weapons as well. Heather manages to get her hands on a pair of bowie knives before slinking off. Aleks, better-known to viewers as Marshal Toro, picks up a wicked sickle. The announcer makes a crack about his choice of weapons. “Looks like the good Marshal has turned, folks! All hail Comrade Communism!” Lucas, mostly ignored by the other competitors, manages to make off with a bag of explosives similar to Edgar's.

Meanwhile, Annette stumbles around the Cornucopia, blind and entirely unsuited to physical combat, ignored by most of the other competitors as the non-threat as she is. Jade, however, seeing an opportunity to win the favour of those running the event, picks up a knife off the ground and slits the defenceless girl's throat.

A few uneventful hours pass. A set of small, camouflage-painted magnezones with cameras bolted on them begin following the various contestants around. Colt, apparently very sure of his abilities, takes his shirt off and begins lifting various rocks and fallen tree trunks for the viewing pleasure of the ladies (And some men) at home. One of these anonymous admirers arranges for a bottle of premixed protein shake to be delivered to a visibly grateful Colt.

Heather, much like Colt, chooses to wait out the first day, constructing a small hidden dugout and some simple improvised traps for herself, hoping to catch some small wandering pixelmon as food, and planning to wait until enough of the other survivors have died before she swoops in to kill them all with ease.

Edgar, however, begins taking a much more direct approach. Tracking Stanley and Lana, he sets a trap for them at a nearby river, laying down Tom's C4 beneath a pile of small rocks to create a crude remote-activated claymore, hiding himself behind a boulder nearby. Peter unexpectedly arrives first, and begins drinking directly from the water. Deciding to wait for the intended targets, Edgar simply waits for Stanley and Lana's eventual arrival. Almost immediately, Stanley and Peter begin fist-fighting, Lana standing back a touch, unintentionally putting Edgar's trap between herself and the boxing pair, with Peter standing directly between Stanley and the bomb.

The detonation is sudden, and destructive. A rock is propelled directly into Lana's head, killing her instantly. Peter's body is riddled with rocks, pushing him onto Stanley, who is knocked onto his back, more dazed than dead. Edgar runs, not realizing that Stanley has survived as he makes his escape. Stanley lies there, stunned for a few minutes, before eventually rolling Peter's body off of himself and going to bury his wife in the soft dirt with only his bare hands.

As the evening turns to night, most of the contestants lie down somewhere to sleep. Shiv gathers some firewood and lights himself a fire for warmth. The smoke is seen by a handful of the survivors, only one of whom chooses to investigate it. Aleks, trying to get a better view of the area and the distant fire, decides to climb a tree. In the fading light of the evening, he misses a branch and falls to his untimely demise.
